How to Build Your Girl Group in New York City

I wanted my Sex and the City moment. Kndrd is how I am actually getting it.

Every girl who has ever watched Sex and the City has had the same thought: I want that.
Not just New York City, but the version of it where you have your people. The Sunday brunches, the spontaneous walks, the group chat that never goes quiet. The feeling of having a Carrie, a Charlotte, a Miranda, and a Samantha — or just being someone's version of one of them.
The problem is nobody tells you how hard it actually is to make friends as an adult in a city of eight million people. My college core four have scattered to cities considerably smaller than the Big Apple, and I am arriving in New York this summer with a big-girl job, a lot of excitement, and genuinely no idea how to meet my people. It is a little terrifying if I am being honest.
And then, in a very on-brand twisted fate, TikTok handed me the answer. Meet Kndrd: the NYC networking app that every woman needs to know about.
First, the Basics
Kndrd is a members-only app built specifically for women in New York City who want to expand their network and find their community. You have to apply to get in, which sounds intimidating but is really just part of what makes it feel worth being a part of. Once you are accepted, it opens up into something that genuinely feels like it was built for exactly this moment in your life.
Your Samantha Moment — the hangouts

Samantha never waited for plans to come to her, and neither should you. The Hangouts are where it actually happens. You can request or join something happening around the city, and the options are genuinely fun — a jazz bar in the LES, a spring walk through Central Park, a Devil Wears Prada movie night.
What I love most is that spots are limited and they fill up fast, so it never feels like a mass event or a networking mixer where you stand around with a name tag. It feels like plans. Like a friend texting you last minute with something good going on and you just have to say yes. I have been looking for that specific feeling in a city where I do not know anyone yet, and this is the closest I have found to it.
Your Charlotte Moment— the forum

Charlotte always believed in people, in putting yourself out there and trusting that the right ones would find you. The Forum is exactly that. You can post about anything on your mind: advice, a sublease, a co-host for your Greek mythology podcast.
My first post was asking for recommendations for a great colorist for blondes in the city. I made a friend. It really is that simple sometimes, and there is something really lovely about a space where women in New York are just genuinely helping each other out.
Your Carrie Moment— the groups

Carrie always knew who she was and found the people who got it. The Groups section is where you do the same. You can join or create any group that fits your life, and I mean that literally. I am in the Solidcore girls group, poetry lovers, Soho girlies, and a few others.
There are also group chats that function like a big thread full of women across the city. My favorite are the introduction chats where everyone shares their name, hometown, and whatever they want people to know about them. I love scrolling through and finding girls from Michigan, fellow alumni, or just someone where I immediately know we would get along. It scratches the same itch as the first day of college, which is exactly the energy a new city needs.
Parting Thoughts
Making friends as an adult in a new city is not something anyone prepares you for, and moving to New York City can feel especially overwhelming when you do not know anyone. But Kndrd is making it feel a lot less daunting and a lot more like the beginning of something really good.
